Advanced Skin Fitness is a leader in Dallas liposuction, providing a variety of surgical solutions to stubborn and disproportionate fatty deposits.

Though diet and exercise are always a good idea, some men and women possess pockets of fat often hereditary in nature that do not respond to traditional treatments. Liposuction is ideal for these men and women, who are of relatively average weight but cannot shake off these fatty deposits.

Patients may undergo liposuction at any point in their lives. However, those whose skin is still elastic enough to return to a smooth contour after fat reduction often see best results. Older patients, who often have less elastic skin, may need to undergo further skin tightening procedures. Advanced Skin Fitness is a leader in Dallas liposuction.

Am I a good candidate for a liposuction?

If you have pockets of excess fat or desire contouring in the following areas, liposuction may be right for you:
  • Abdomen
  • Love handles
  • Hips and buttocks
  • Knees
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Cheeks, jowls and neck
  • Upper arms

It is possible to perform liposuction on several areas of the body at once, and liposuction can also be done alongside other plastic surgery.

In addition, liposuction may be used to treat gynecomastia, otherwise known as male breast enlargement, which occurs in approximately eight percent of adolescent and adult males.

It's important to note that liposuction is not a substitute for regular weight loss, nor is it effective against cellulite. Advanced Skin Fitness offers other treatments for these instances.

Your Personal Consultation

Liposuction affects everyone differently. Therefore Dr. Robinson will consider your characteristics and body shape to determine the best treatments. You will work with Dr. Robinson to target the areas you'd like to improve, which will help determine realistic expectations.

How will Dr. Robinson evaluate me for liposuction?

The consultation will include a discussion of your full medical history, ranging from previous surgeries, existing medical conditions and current medications. It's also important to disclose your history, if any, with smoking, drugs, or heart and lung diseases, or any family history with blood clots, trouble with anesthesia or heart disease. Additionally, diabetes, thyroid problems, high blood pressure may increase risks.

Current weight and how much you plan to lose or gain in the future will also factor into your evaluation. Dr. Robinson will question you about the effects prior weight loss had on the target areas, and he will assess your skin's elasticity and amount of fat to be removed.

How Liposuction is Performed

Liposuction is performed by inserting a cannula a hollow tube connected to a vacuum pressure unit through one or more small incisions. The surgeon then guides the tube to literally suck the unwanted fat out of the body.

What are some variations to the liposuction technique?

Modern plastic surgery often employs the "tumescent" technique, which involves using saline with a blood vessel constrictor in the targeted areas, which plumps them up prior to surgery. The previous most common technique was the "dry" method. Dr. Robinson will consult with you on which method he thinks is best for your body.

Other options exist, depending on instruments or where in the skin the suction is applied. These factors depend in part on your own body shape, skin elasticity and the goals you've set with Dr. Robinson in your liposuction consultation.

Men take to liposuction particularly well, and find it helpful for eliminating excessive fat around the waist. Liposuction on the abdomen often works quite well, giving the patient a flatter profile and defined waistline.

How should I prepare for surgery?

There are several things to take account of before surgery, which you will discuss in depth with Dr. Robinson. Smokers should quit smoking long before surgery. Blood thinners, aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs may cause increased bleeding during surgery, so you will be asked to avoid taking those for one to two weeks before liposuction. Likewise, herbs, diet pills and Vitamin E can affect your heartbeat and bleeding. We will provide other instructions.

Depending on the type of surgery and anesthesia used, we require you to have someone take you home and to stay with you for at least one night.

What will the day of surgery be like?

On the eve of surgery, you can take approved medications and eat before midnight to ensure an empty stomach. One hour before surgery, you will take pre-operative medications with water. Wear warm clothing, such as jogging pants and a jacket that can be zipped or buttoned, so you do not have to raise your arms after the liposuction procedure.

We administer medications to you during the procedure for comfort. General anesthesia is most common, though we may use IV sedation and epidural anesthesia in some cases. You should be able to go home in a few hours, and you will be drunk but able to walk.

After the liposuction surgery is finished, you will rest in a recovery area where we will closely monitor you. We will wrap you in a compression garment to reduce swelling, which you must wear for three weeks. You may shower immediately if you keep the garment in place. Only remove the garment if you are sure it will not be painful to put back in. Fluid will leak out of the surgery incisions for a couple of days.

How will I look initially?

Recovery time varies greatly from person to person. We encourage you to move around a bit the day after surgery to help with blood circulation, though for the first few days you should limit yourself to brief periods of activity. Aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications and smoking are still off limits.

Your surgeon might temporarily remove your compression garment to examine the treated areas. There will be bruising and swelling, including swelling of the scrotum or vulva in cases of abdominal liposuction, but that is normal. The swelling will begin to subside approximately seven days after liposuction, though bruising tends to last three weeks or longer. You may also experience numbness which will persist for several weeks. Stitches are commonly absorbable.

When can I resume my normal activities?

Most people can resume normal activities within a few days to a week, and can begin some exercise not long after that. Factors affecting your getting back to a normal routine are the extent of the liposuction and your ability to work with swelling and bruising.

Results of Your Liposuction

Healing from liposuction takes patience, due to fluid retention and sometimes prolonged swelling. It may take some time before you finally settle into the shape you desire.

Sometimes a patient may decide they want to improve an area that has already been treated with liposuction. This can sometimes be accomplished in the office with local anesthesia, or may require more in-depth revisions and a return to surgery.

I understand that every surgical procedure has risks, but how can I learn more so that I can make an informed decision?

Liposuction is now advanced and common enough that thousands of people successfully undergo the procedure with no major complications. But liposuction is surgery, so a full assessment of the risks and rewards is wise. Dr. Robinson or another staff member can help you decide if liposuction is right for you.

There are potential complications to liposuction. These include infection, bleeding, complications related to anesthesia and blood clots in the lungs or legs. It's also possible that blood may accumulate under the skin, but this usually resolves itself and rarely requires further treatment.

Numbness of the skin following the procedure is usually temporary, but it may persist for some time, and skin discoloration may appear in the treated areas. Contour irregularities wrinkling or depression of the skin are also possible, but treatments are available to minimize the fallout.

How long will the results last?

So long as you maintain a steady weight, the results of liposuction are permanent. Patients find that even if they gain a few extra pounds, it sometimes distributes more evenly across the body. Gaining and continuing to gain weight may set back progress.

Maintaining a Relationship with Your Plastic Surgeon

Your experience with Advanced Skin Fitness doesn't end when the surgery does. After your liposuction procedure, it's important to eat right and exercise to maintain your shape and keep a generally high level of health. Dr. Robinson will continue to work with you on this after the surgery is complete.
